Sundials

Sundials have a very special appeal and will take pride of place in any garden lucky enough to own one. When positioned correctly a sundial tracks the (apparent) motion of the sun and will tell the time with a surprising degree of accuracy, although allowance must be made for the seasonal variation in the speed at which the sun travels through its elliptical orbital path. A good sundial will allow for this variation by means of the “Equation of Time” which shows the difference between the time as told by the sun and the time as told by a clock. For example, in November sundial time is ahead of clock time by aproximately 16 minutes and in February it is behind by approximately 14 minutes.

We usually have several fine sundials on display on our premises and it is always worth calling in person to take a closer look.
